Elizabeth Ocean's Insights: Why Sleep May Be the Missing Piece in Women's Health
“What if menopause isn't the closing of a chapter, but the opening of one of the most powerful seasons of a woman's life?” - Elizabeth Ocean
There are conversations that educate us, and then there are conversations that gently challenge us to rethink everything we thought we knew. My interview with Susan Lieberman was one of those conversations.
Like many women, I've heard countless discussions about hormones, nutrition, exercise, stress management, and aging gracefully. Yet what struck me most during our conversation was the realization that one of the most powerful healing tools available to us is also one of the most overlooked: sleep.
In a culture that often rewards busyness and celebrates productivity, rest is frequently treated as optional. Susan reminded us that sleep is not a luxury. It is a biological necessity that influences nearly every aspect of our physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing.
The Foundation Beneath Everything Else
What resonated deeply with me was Susan's description of sleep as the foundation upon which all other wellness practices are built.
Many women spend years searching for solutions to fatigue, mood changes, brain fog, weight fluctuations, and hormonal challenges. We try new supplements, diets, exercise programs, and personal development tools. Yet if our sleep is compromised, the body never receives the opportunity to fully repair, restore, and regulate itself.
As Susan explained, sleep supports hormone production, emotional processing, detoxification, immune function, and energy restoration.
That insight caused me to pause.
How often do we focus on fixing symptoms while overlooking one of the body's most fundamental needs?
Sometimes the most powerful transformation begins with something as simple as giving ourselves permission to rest.
Reframing Menopause as a New Beginning
Another perspective that stayed with me was Susan's invitation to view menopause differently.
For decades, women have been conditioned to see menopause as something to fear, survive, or endure. Yet Susan offered a refreshing alternative. What if this season of life is actually an invitation into greater wisdom, freedom, and self-awareness?
I believe many women are ready for that shift.
The second half of life should not be defined by limitation. It can be a season of reinvention, confidence, and deeper alignment with who we truly are.

Ancient Wisdom Still Has Something to Teach Us
I was equally fascinated by Susan's ability to bridge Western science and Eastern healing traditions.
Too often, wellness conversations become polarized. People feel they must choose between conventional medicine or holistic approaches. Susan's work demonstrates that both can coexist beautifully.
Science gives us valuable research and understanding. Ancient wisdom reminds us to see the whole person—not just symptoms, but emotions, energy, lifestyle, and environment.
When we combine these perspectives, we create a more complete picture of healing.
The future of women's wellness may not be found in choosing one path over another, but in honoring the wisdom found in both.
A Reminder for Every Woman
If there was one message I hope women take away from this conversation, it is this:
Your wellbeing matters.
Your rest matters.
Your body is not working against you.
Whether you're navigating menopause, managing stress, building a business, raising a family, or stepping into a new chapter of life, your health deserves your attention and care.
The more I host these conversations, the more I am reminded that empowerment begins with awareness. When women understand what is happening within their bodies, they can make choices from a place of knowledge rather than fear.
Susan Lieberman's message is both simple and profound: support your sleep, support your body, and trust that this stage of life can become one of vitality rather than decline.
And perhaps that's the real invitation—to stop fighting our bodies and start listening to the wisdom they have been offering us all along.
