The Hidden Weight of Being the Boss

“The very business I once resented became the freedom I needed most.” -— Elizabeth Ocean, Holistic Business Coach | Founder of Women's Holistic Business Academy | Mentor for Women Entrepreneurs and Leaders

One of the things I don't think we talk about enough as women entrepreneurs is the weight that comes with being the boss.

From the outside, running a business can look like freedom. Flexible schedules, working from home, choosing your own hours, building something meaningful, and creating a life on your own terms.

And yes, all of that can be true.

But there's another side to it too.

The pressure of making every decision.

The responsibility of supporting clients and team members.

The uncertainty that can come with income.

The emotional labour of holding everything together, even when you're struggling yourself.

There have been many moments in my business journey when I wanted to walk away.

Moments when the responsibility felt overwhelming.

Moments when I questioned whether it was all worth it.

I know I'm not alone in that. So many women business owners carry these thoughts quietly. We love what we do, but that doesn't mean it isn't hard. Entrepreneurship asks a lot of us. It asks us to lead, to adapt, to stay resilient, and to keep moving forward even when life is throwing challenges our way.

When Midlife Changes Everything

For me, that hidden weight became even more apparent during perimenopause and menopause.

Like so many women in their forties and fifties, I experienced significant physical, emotional, and hormonal changes that affected almost every area of my life. Fatigue, disrupted sleep, emotional sensitivity, changing energy levels, nervous system overwhelm, hot flushes, and days when I simply didn't feel like myself.

And yet, the business didn't stop.

Clients still needed support.

Decisions still needed to be made.

Responsibilities were still there.

I know many women are navigating this exact reality right now. They're running businesses, supporting families, caring for ageing parents, managing relationships, and moving through major life transitions while their bodies are changing in ways they never expected.

What surprises me is how rarely we talk about entrepreneurship and menopause in the same conversation, even though so many women are experiencing both at the same time.

The Freedom Hidden Inside the Responsibility

What I eventually realised was something I hadn't fully appreciated before.

The very business I sometimes felt burdened by was also giving me something incredibly valuable.

Freedom.

When my energy was low, I could adjust my schedule.

When my body needed rest, I could create space for it.

When life felt overwhelming, I had the flexibility to work differently.

I wasn't tied to someone else's timetable.

I wasn't asking permission for time off.

I wasn't trying to squeeze myself into a structure that no longer worked for me.

Instead, I had the ability to build my days around what I needed most.

That realisation shifted everything.

The responsibility of being the boss was still there.

But so was the freedom.

A New Definition of Success

When many women start a business, they often focus on financial independence. And while that's important, I've found that what many of us are really seeking is something deeper.

We want a life that supports our wellbeing.

Especially in midlife, success starts to look different.

It's no longer just about revenue, growth, or achievement.

It's about sustainability.

It's about health.

It's about having the space to breathe.

It's about creating a business that works with your life rather than against it.

One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that success isn't about pushing harder or proving yourself through exhaustion. It's about building something that can support you through every season of life.

The hidden weight of being the boss is real.

I've felt it.

But I've also discovered that sometimes the very thing that feels heavy today becomes the thing you're most grateful for tomorrow.
