Women's Spirit Festival Interview Recap

“You don't have to push through every challenge alone. Sometimes the next breakthrough comes through connection, not effort.” - Elizabeth Ocean

For many women, life’s challenges are carried quietly. Pain, disappointment, shame, and even anger are often pushed aside in an effort to appear strong and capable. But according to story coach, speaker, writer and creator of the Story Alchemy journey Marie-Josée Borduas, true healing begins when we allow ourselves to share our stories.

In a recent conversation with Elizabeth Ocean, Marie-Josée explored the transformational power of storytelling and how personal experiences can become a source of healing—not only for ourselves, but for others as well.

One of the central themes of the discussion was the idea that our stories are medicine. The experiences we often hide can become powerful tools for growth when we are willing to speak about them honestly. By sharing our stories, we give others permission to acknowledge their own struggles, creating a ripple effect of healing and connection.

Marie-Josée also spoke about the tendency many women have to navigate difficult experiences alone. Often learned early in life, this pattern of self-reliance can create isolation and prevent deeper connection. While independence can be a strength, she explained that constantly carrying everything on our own comes at a cost.

Story coach Marie-Josée Borduas discusses the power of storytelling, forgiveness, emotional healing, and personal transformation for women seeking deeper connection and growth.

Many women develop what she describes as a “strong and independent” identity as a survival strategy. Over time, however, this can lead to suppressing emotions, hiding vulnerabilities, and living only part of their truth. Real strength, she suggests, includes allowing ourselves to be seen and supported.

"Your story is medicine. The very thing you want to hide may be the thing someone else needs to hear. When you share your story, you give others permission to heal."

Another powerful insight from the conversation was the importance of accessing wisdom beyond the logical mind. Marie-Josée helps women move beyond overthinking and self-censorship by listening to the wisdom stored within the body. Through writing and reflection, individuals can uncover truths that may have been hidden beneath years of conditioning and expectations.

She also described how storytelling can shift our perspective from seeing ourselves as victims of circumstances to recognizing ourselves as the heroes of our own journey. Through reflection and self-expression, we begin to see our resilience, growth, and ability to move forward.

A particularly valuable concept she shared was the idea of “threshold moments”—those uncomfortable points where growth is possible, but resistance appears. Rather than turning away from discomfort, Marie-Josée encourages a simple practice of pausing, breathing, and sitting with emotions for ninety seconds. This creates space for the feeling to move through the body and often reveals the next step forward.

Throughout the conversation, Marie-Josée reminded listeners that life is constantly evolving. Like the changing seasons or the transformation of a butterfly, we are always in a process of becoming.

Her message is ultimately one of trust: trust your story, trust your growth, and trust that where you are right now is exactly where you need to be.

"Your story is medicine. The very thing you want to hide may be the thing someone else needs to hear."
— Marie-Josee Borduas
